14:1514088Within 100m14070Sunny14076Rough114101Not recorded14098Adult14094DivingI was in a kayak, it would have his head above water then go under for a while then popped up closer to me. It wasnt scared, looked at me then carried on doing its own thing. About 20ft away from me. Based on the forehead shape (looked a bit like a dog) id say it was a common, not grey seal. Though its colour did seem grey. It was a beautiful surprise encounter.

I was concerned that they might be caught in nets as they were surprisingly static. Neither seemed distressed, and I was able to see their full bodies at one point and no evidence of trouble. They appeared healthy, and as curious about my presence as I was at theirs. At no point did I do anything to disturb them other than watch. They appeared very calm just surfacing and bobbing and watching. They were still there after I left.

It seemed curious about us. We stood still for about 10 minutes watching while he swam back and forth. We left when he came ashore about 100 m down the beach. He? was quite dark but not as big as an adult. We think he was about 1.2-1.5m long
